Marley Day: Test Your Pet Day Pitt County

01/25/2007
By: Marley Fund

Marley Day: Test Your Pet Day Our annual Test Your Pet Day will be held this year on Saturday, February 24th at Petsmart in Greenville, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. This year, Dr. Sandra Mac Kenzie, Marley Fund board member and veterinarian advisor to animals residing at the Marley House (a safe haven for asymptomatic animals that carry the virus), will be testing the first 60 felines for a $10 donation, in the veterinarian facility located inside Petsmart. At this time Marley Fund volunteers will be there with materials on both viruses to help educate and will be there to counsel pet owners if need be, in the case that we have a kitty that tests positive at this time. Marley Fund counselors will also be on site to answer any questions. Feline leukemia is the number one killer of cats, known as the silent killer, as there are no symptoms testing is the only avenue to diagnose infection. There are more cats with a positive retrovirus status (FIV, FeLV or both diseases) than there are residents in the city of Los Angeles. Thirty-one million cats are at risk for exposure to FIV each year. Yet, only four percent of cats are tested for this potentially deadly disease. Of clinics surveyed, only 11 percent of feline clients who are at risk of exposure are being tested. As our mission is to educate others on Feline Leukemia Virus and other infectious agents, such as FIV, we hope to have a very successful day in honor of Marley and to help prevent this from happening to others. Marley, the feline leukemia positive cat for which the Marley Fund is named, would have been seven years old on this date.
